The School's fast cruiser/racer yacht 'Max' and crew Bob and Jan Trimble, took the class 4 honours in this year's Royal Southampton Double-Handed 'Cherboug' race (one of a series of eight races of varying lengths held each year).
This year's race was slightly unusual because (courtesy of blockading French fishermen) it didn't actually go to Cherboug!! A fleet of around 35 boats started from the 'Flying Fish' race mark east of the Bramble Bank in the Solent just after 7 PM on Friday 23rd May. After rounding the 'Ocean Safety' mark (approx 30 mile ESE of Bembridge) at 0030 on 24th, 'Max' crossed the finish line back in the Solent after 9hr40 mins and 70 miles.
'Max' is a Swedish built Maxi 1050. She's a safe and easily handled yacht that's ideal for novice and experienced sailors alike. And as her race pedigree proves, she has a good turn of speed and lively perfomence when it's called for. When racing she carries exactly the same inventory of gear as when she is hosting sailing courses.
